Cyberpunk- a science fiction genre noted for its focus on high tech and low life. It features advanced science such as information technology and cybernetics, coupled with a degree of breakdown or racial change in the social order. Cyberpunk plots often center on a conflict among hackers, artifical intelligences, and megacorporations, and tend to be set in a near-future Earth, rather than the far-future or galactic vistas.
This book can be compared to a Cyberpunk in the way that it starts off in the future and technology is way more advanced than it is today. Also that Gully Foyle is very poor in the begining refering to the definition saying that it is focused on both the high tech and low life. For example, Page 128 states that "Every nerve plexus had been rewired, microscopic transistors and transformers had been buried in muscle and bone, a minute platinum outlet showed at the base of his spine. To this Foyle affixed a power pack the size of a pea and switched it on. His body began an internal electronic vibration that was almost mechanical." The artifical intelligences are mentioned in the book because the autorities are always trying to find Gully. Megacorporations are also refered to in the book whenever the Mr. Prestros are mentioned. That is a major corporation because Prestign is selling a product to the general public and it has become a major corporation by the demand of the public. It is set in a near-future Earth because it is still talking about Earth in the future but just by a different name, Terra, and the story still takes place in our universe rather than the galactic vistas.
